Already in 2012 the State Government has rejected the Vasse Coal Project and Premier Barnett has stated that: ” The unique environmental, viticultural and tourism values of the region cannot be compromised, and the Government will implement the most stringent planning framework possible to protect it from all forms of high impact mining.”
And in late February, Western Coal withdrew their applications for 3 coal exploration leases (E70-4079/4080/4091) because of the strength and the commitment of ordinary people who objected and got dragged into the process. By taking the threat seriously and engaging lawyers and barristers to fight “just an exploration licence” the community protected all homes, farms and businesses in the region from these speculative carpetbaggers creating wealth on their balance sheet at the expense of our assets.
Unfortunately it doesn’t stop there…..Western Coal still have 3 other licences stretching from Yelverton to Margaret River and Titan Energy have applied for a Special Prospecting Authority for “Coal Bed Methane” across the same area.
“Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) director of WA Stedman Ellis said WA’s shale gas projects were in relatively remote areas, unlike in the eastern states.” Tell that to the people in Vasse, Busselton, Cowaramup and Margaret River who are about to be invaded by Titan Energy’s new permit which extends from Margaret River to Busselton over 280 square kilometres. http://ccwa.org.au/takeaction/fracking
We need to show these companies that people have homes and businesses here, and it is more than a bit rude to superimpose unwanted mining activties over Western Australia’s dairy, beef, potato, wine and vegetable growers. We are building up a map of existing land use, please print a google map of your area and send in details of what you have.
The coal seam that is attracting interest from interstate and foreign miners is in the Vasse Coal Shelf that lies east of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge slicing through the whole region from Dunsborough/Busselton down to Augusta. The E70/4079, 4080, 3914, 3933, 3961. 4091 Applicant Western Coal (who are probably just sterilising your assets to make money) are based here at 273 William Street in Northbridge. It seems they are a diversified international operation.
On Sunday 16th October 2011, to celebrate the start of National Water Week, over 200 people attended the Margaret River Rally on the National Day of Action to Defend our Water. Across the country 10,000 people gathered to protest against the onslaught of coal and coal seam gas on rural and regional communities. We resurrected the community mural to remind people that the Margaret River Wine Region is too beautiful to undermine.
